Free iPhone Apps
Tumblrâs iPhone app, also called Tumblr, was updated to version 1.1 today. Now while a .1 update would generally signify bug fixes or a minor update, in this instance Tumblr 1.1 actually includes several major new features. If you have a Tumblr site and an iPhone, you canât go wrong with this free, but very well done app.
For those who arenât familiar with Tumblr, it is the major player in the âmini-blogâ or âtumblelogâ market right now, competing with Posterous. Mini-blogging is a step between âmicro-bloggingâ (ie. Twitter, FriendFeed) and traditional blogging (ie WordPress, Blogspot, this site, etc.). Mini-blogging is typically short, frequent, mixed-media posts with little or no narrative. The idea is to quickly share some form of media in a way thatâs more than a Twitter post but not quite a full blog post.
This update does indeed include various bug fixes, but it also brings the iPhone app closer to the full web experience. iPhone 3GS owners can now post videos using the app. Editing past posts is now possible from the iPhone, as is the ability to specify tags for posts, publish a post as a draft, private, or even schedule it for later. Previously, a âdraftâ post was local to the iPhone until published. Now, when you âpublishâ as a draft, it is saved up to your Tumblr account as a draft, ready to be edited and/or published later.
The following are the new features included in Tumblr 1.1 for iPhone as listed on the appâs App Store description.
Video posts. Choose from your camera roll or capture a new video right from the app (iPhone 3GS only). Native editing. Need to add tags or update a post on the go? Just tap the âeditâ button on a post in the Dashboard to load it up in a native post editor. Rewritten Dashboard tab (replaces Sites tab). Check all your posts from each of your Tumblr blogs, including drafts and queues. Rewritten Advanced Posts Options. New support for Save as draft, Add to Queue, Publish On, Custom post URLâs, Send to Twitter, and Ask a question. Search. Supports searching across Tumblr, in your Dashboard, or on just your posts (per blog). Built-in web browser. No more losing your place in the Dashboard. Post upload status. Never wonder how long that Audio post is going to take again. New bookmarklet for links. Post geotagging. Ability to reblog othersâ posts.
I tried out the new posting and browsing features, along with the new search function and I must say that it is slick! I love using Tumblr for my personal tumblelog, and this update really improves the mobile experience. Iâll probably be more enthusiastic about updating my Tumblr site while on the go now that I can have more control over each post.
Tumblr 1.1 update is now rolling on through the iPhone App Store, and is a free for all current and new users. You can find it here.
