Those who have enjoyed the use of the mobile browser-maker Skyfire on their Android phone systems are now seeing it made available to those with Apple products, such as the iPhone. What is Skyfire?

Skyfire is a software that looks and acts like a WebKit browser for Android phones with the exception that it lets you stream Flash video (and soon Silverlight). How is this unique? Currently WebKit doesn’t support either technology.

The software Skyfire can detect a broken embedded video on a web page and signal Skyfire servers to fetch the video and transcode it from its original format to HTML 5 video. Skyfire servers also adjust the video resolution to factors such as your phone’s screen size and network speed. Both of these help provide smoother streaming. This means, playing your favorite videos without buffering interruptions or sputtering. The downside of the current Skyfire release is it can’t detect every video in a playlist and when this happens, it can crash your browser tab. It also does not address Flash games or other interactive sites. Other problems you may encounter with Skyfire is that sites like Hulu is blocking the software, but of course Hulu is trying to sell a product with its own mobile app.

What else can Skyfire do that makes people love it so? It adds to the Android’s WebKit browser with a button for viewing more relevant content like images, headlines, Twitter updates and a link-sharing modules. Also, to switch between desktop, Android and iPhone mode, there is a browser tab-switch. There is also a drop-down menu with access to the settings, download lists, text selection, and other tools. There is a back arrow and bookmarking, plus, if you are running OS 2.0 or higher, it also supports multitouch pinch-zooming. Skyfire also has a social networking focus. You can check in with your Facebook account on iPhone. You can use an app that includes search functionality showing tweets, images, headline news and such. There is bookmarking and sharing. You can see full web pages like CNET.com and ESPN.com instead of mobile-optimized sites.

Skyfire isn’t new on the scene, it has been around for a while in the form of 1.0 and 1.5 models. It has been used on Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, who Skyfire actually helped design to look like a traditional desktop browser. Skyfire continues to make improvements so they can stay ahead of the smartphone industry. Currently they are working on a version for BlackBerry, as soon as Blackberry releases its new WebKit-based Blackberry browser. Currently, the company is trying to keep up with Opera and their success in getting a browser into the App Store. Skyfire wants to follow suit bringing with them the Flash video transcoding and streaming.

Last, Skyfire is entering the Apple world with its new release for iPhone. The app is said to look and operate like Android. It is built on the WebKit browser and uses Skyfire servers to push down the Flash video that has been forbidden on the iPhone – due to iPhones forbidding of Adobe Systems. While this is still a work around, Skyfire is looking at better options or at least giving iPhone users something they don’t have.

Although the new version of Skyfire is designed for iPhone and iPod Touch, it will run on the iPad but only in iPhone-compatibility mode.
