The HTC HD2 is the first Windows Mobile with a capacitive touchscreen and also with HTC’s Sense UI. The homescreen comes with 13 tabs — whose icons are depicted at the bottom — in the form of a dock. These tabs can be customised to the extent that the features can be deactivated but new ones cannot be added. Under the home tab is the calendar, clock and weather information. Sliding the homescreen up reveals the tabs to add 15 favourite features for direct access. The browser tabs let you add 10 bookmarks. The screen lock is sliding at the top of the screen and also depicts the number of unnoticed events in the phone like missed calls, unread messages, etc. The main menu of the device is typical of Windows Mobile 6.5 with a honeycomb structure. Contacts can be integrated in a manner similar to previous HTC devices with Sense UI. They can also be integrated with Facebook. The device has a smart dialler, which finds contacts by dialling the number or name of the contacts. Input options include phone keypad, compact QWERTY and full QWERTY. Full QWERTY keypad in landscape mode is the most comfortable.

The HTC HD2 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 and comes with a number of pre-loaded applications such as Windows Market Place, Microsoft MyPhone, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Opera 9.5 browser and Google Maps. The Opera 9.5 Web browser makes browsing extremely comfortable. The phone has Wi-Fi connectivity for fast browsing and can also be used as a Wi-Fi router to connect to PCs. As expected, the phone supports all popular Email clients. It comes with Mobile Office that lets you create and edit documents, worksheets and presentations. The Adobe Reader lets you open PDF files.
The phone comes with a built-in GPS router but no navigation software except Google Maps. It has a Quick GPS application but it comes with limited validity. Other utility features include RSS reader hub, digital compass and remote desktop mobile. Using Facebook and Twitter on the phone is also convenient.
The HTC HD2 has a 5.0-megapixel camera with dual LED flash. There is no hardware key for the camera and one has to use the touch sensitive key on the screen. The highest resolution can be set at 2592×1552 pixels. Other features include touch focus, flicker adjustment, grid view and picture quality options like basic, normal, fine and super fine. Colour effects include grayscale, sepia and negative. Additional camera settings include white balance, brightness, ISO, self-timer and panorama mode. It also has a special mode for pictures of contacts and a World Card Mobile application for capturing and reading business cards.
Videos can be captured in normal and MMS modes. Format options include MPEG4 and H.263. Highest resolution can be set at VGA (640×480 pixels). Recording limit has a number of options such as 10 seconds, 3 minutes, 2 MB, etc. While the picture quality is good, the video quality is acceptable.
The HD2 has a music player and FM radio. Sound quality through the headphones is great. With the 3.5 mm jack you can use the headsets of your choice. In the music player tracks can be sorted according to artists, albums, genres and composers. The phone comes with audio boosters but that works only when the headphones are plugged in. There are 20 pre-sets in the audio booster feature. In the FM radio, six presets can be saved on the homescreen. Additional apps include Windows Media Player, MP3 tuner and YouTube client.
The HTC HD2 has a 1230 mAh battery and it gives a good back up despite a large screen. A single charge lasts for a day constant Emailing and an hour of calling and playing the music. The sales pack includes an 8 GB memory card.
