It’s finally available, it’s business oriented, it not a BlackBerry, it’s not an iPhone, it’s the HTC desire. This is the latest HTC smartphone to use the Google Android based operating platform.

I have used numerous phones for business; hey I have to try them all to know what really works for our customers. I have used the HTC TyTN II, HTC Diamond HD2, BlackBerry Bold, Palm Treo Pro, Nokia E71, Nokia N97, Apple iPhone; all have their great benefits and features, all have their avid followers, but finally a smartphone has arrived that does it all, it does everything the phones above can do combined.

The HTC Desire has successfully developed a phone that is nearly as good at messaging as a BlackBerry with the incredible offering of over 35000 apps (and more being developed) to counter an iPhone’s features – and more! With a RRP of $899 it is $20 more than the iPhone 3GS but at Outright Mobile Phones we have it at $775.47 outright, unlocked and shipped to you, that is $103.53 cheaper than the iPhone 3GS 16GB.

You may have heard recently of the law suits going on in the US where the major mobile phone companies like Apple and Nokia have been filing lawsuits against each other for infringement of patents as the major companies try to gain an advantage over one another. Well Apple is also suing HTC over their latest touchscreen phones – Apple is clearly fearful that they will lose market share as these incredible handsets come into the market place.

The design, usability and range of features on the Desire ensure that this smartphone is a significant advancement on Google’s first generation Android phone.  Unlike some of the current Android phones in the market the Desire utilizes Androids latest 2.1 version, not the previous 1.5 version used in recently released models like the Motorola Dext,

So what’s running this phone? The extremely zippy Snapdragon 1GHz processor – 1GHz is nearly as much as some of the netbooks in the marketplace! While the 3.7 inch AMOLED multi touch screen, is as clear as crystal when compared to an iPhone’s 3.5 inch display; it is also bigger, brighter and crisper. It weighs in at a reasonable 135 grams, the same weight as the iPhone 3GS.

The Desire comes with heaps of applications and features like HTC Sense, this allows you to have 7 different home screens each with its own programs, widgets, and shortcuts plus these just to name a few more; Facebook, YouTube, Peep (which is HTC’s Twitter app), YouTube, music and video player, a superb calendar, Google search, Mapping, stock charts, an album for photos, SMS, MMS & Email messaging, and many other widgets that you can use for subscribing to your favourite site feeds.

With the ability to sync your email, contacts and calendar with your Gmail account, your handset will sync with your desktop or laptop to keep you email, calendar and contacts up to date no matter where you enter it.

Want more apps? Android Market now has over 35,000 apps available. Apple’s App Store has in excess of 150,000 apps, Android Market is quickly growing. You will find that the apps within Android market explode as developers are switching to the Android system for mobile based application due to a simpler and easier approval process. In December 2009 Android Market had just 16,000 apps, today it has over 35,000!

The phone features four buttons located on the front face of the handset just beneath the touch screen. A Home key, Menu key, Search key and an optical trackpad that you may use to navigate through your applications, messaging and web pages – although you will more than likely find yourself using the touch screen.

There is no keyboard like the HTC Dream, but with the large touch screen a full QWERTY keyboard is available on-screen in both landscape and portrait mode. While getting use to using the touch screen keyboard can take some time, the large software keyboard on the Desire will get you there quicker. The touch screen has a feature knows as haptic feedback, this makes it vibrate softly with every key press to improve your ability to use the large touch screen keyboard. After a little practise you will also find that you make few typos.

For the business user, the only thing lacking is the QWERTY keyboard, but putting that aside  Microsoft Exchange is supported and you are able to search contacts on your corporate database similar to the BlackBerry. Should you use Google’s online software, Gmail, you will be able to sync the phone and have a ‘push email’ function similar to that of a BlackBerry.

Using the Quickoffice application is a delight for documents and spreadsheets, and a quirky little feature on your calendar – it even shows what the weather will be like next to your appointment!

With the super fast processor, web browsing is a dream, and huge plus over th iPhone, and with Adobe Flash support –something the iPhone does not have – means that all the videos, ads and images built in to web pages are rendered perfectly. You can even zoom in on a page simply by pinching the screen, and without the need to scroll your text, as this is automatically reformatted, so that the text fits the screen as you are zooming in.

Sick of being tied in to iTunes with your iPhone – with the Desire, you’re the king, so you can download music and videos from where you want, all the major music formats and video formats are supported.

With a 5 Mega pixel camera and flash you can be taking photos wherever you go, but add the ‘Footprints’ app and the photo is instantly tagged with the users current GPS location from the handsets inbuilt GPS.

With such incredible features that you will be using all day every day, you will need to charge your handset each night as the battery will only last between 1 and 2 days when in constant use.

The Google Android platform will redefine the smartphone market in the way the iPhone did, but without the restrictions that Apple has imposed, with a name like desire – everyone will want one.
