With its crazy flip out QWERTY keyboard and Android operating system, the Motorola Backflip incorporates eccentric design features with Smartphone technology. The device utilises the MotorBlur user interface which makes for seamless tasking and an animated touch user interface.
The obvious design feature is the keyboard hinged to the back of the phones chassis which flips round and transforms the phone in to a powerful communications device and also enables you to navigate the handsets features with a touch sensitive pad called BackTrack in a landscape media mode the pad is located on the underside of the keyboard for your fingertips to access. The phones platinum silver bodywork compliments the vibrant 3.1 inch HVGA screen, the phone weighs 133g and sizes up at 53 x 108 x 15.3mm which isn’t bad considering the extra bulk the keyboard supposedly adds.
With the many Smartphone’s currently available, connectivity is essential and the Backflip covers this field quite well. Motorola have given this model high speed web capabilities via HSDPA and Wi Fi, the Backflip offers speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps using the Android Webkit. Internet connections are also possible using the class 12 variants of GPRS and EDGE and the Android Market is avaiable for additional apps, satellite navigation is also possible with aGPS, GoogleMaps with street view included is also at your disposal.
Another important factor in a good Smartphone is its ability to keep you in touch with social networks. The Motorola Backflip’s MotoBlur gives you a special widget call Happenings which houses your phonebook, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace apps all in one space. The phone also has a document viewer and a voice memo feature for the work conscious. The handset runs Android 1.5 but can be upgraded the 2.1 version.
The integrated multi media player is capable of running an extensive variety of audio and video formats including mp4 and mp3. The 5MP camera is n in built auto focus, 4x digital zoom and single LED flash. The cameras usability is good, GeoTagging is featured and the image capture options give you various effects to play with. The Backflip as 2GB of memory which come with the package, but this obviously can be expanded all the way up to 32GB with the MicroSD slot.
The Motorola Backflip is unique both in appearance and design and performs very well, it’s a very good web browser, brilliant for keeping a hectic social life in order, and an ample entertainment device. The Backflip is a new breed of Android Smartphone and is more than capable of holding its own against its competition.
